NMR Controlled Base Oil Manufacturing

Below is a link to a magazine article covering an example of NMR applied to base oil manufacturing:

Parameters that are of interest in base oil manufacture are:

Carbon Aromaticity (FA), Carbon Naphthenicity (FN), and Carbon paraffinicity (FP)

Viscosity or Viscosity Index

Refractive Index

Density

Distillation

The FA/FP/FN parameters are discussed in detail elsewhere. The analysis of lube oils in the various stages of production is very similar to that performed on HVGO FCC Feeds.

The NMR monitors the HVGO feed, the de-aromatized product and the de-waxed product. The NMR spectrum itself can be used to monitor changes in the aromatic, naphthenic, and paraffinic character of the various oils. Further details are available upon request.
